1. Our Company
MECHON is a specialist consultancy providing engineering design solutions for environmental control systems. We design process HVAC, local exhaust ventilation (LEV), pollution control, and energy recovery systems for clients across the defence, pharmaceutical, automotive, manufacturing, and education sectors.
Our work protects people from ill-health, protects the public from pollution, and provides comfort within the workplace. Recent projects include:
• LEV systems for a major automotive manufacturer’s battery production facility
• Ventilation design for a naval defence site controlling exposure to carcinogens
• Site-wide exposure control audits for a major aerospace and defence company
• HVAC systems for a teaching anatomy suite protecting staff from formaldehyde vapours
• Ventilation systems for an R&D facility at a major paint manufacturer
We are a small, specialist team where every engineer makes a visible impact. You will work directly with end-users and project stakeholders — not as one name among hundreds. You will be known, supported, and given genuine responsibility from the outset.
2. Why This Role Exists
MECHON is growing and we need an additional consulting engineer to support our increasing project workload across multiple sectors. You will join a close-knit group of engineers who take pride in delivering technically excellent work in a niche discipline that most building services consultancies don’t touch.
We’ll be honest: our discipline is specialist. Even experienced mechanical engineers typically need 2–4 years of structured development at MECHON before they are fully self-reliant in our field. We invest heavily in that development. What we need from you is strong engineering fundamentals, genuine curiosity, and the resilience to learn a complex discipline properly rather than superficially.
3. The Role
This is a consulting engineering role. You will be trained to conduct engineering assessments, perform complex calculations, and produce technical reports and specifications for clients across multiple sectors. This is not a drawing or CAD production role — MECHON has a dedicated CAD team who produce project drawings from your engineering designs and instructions.
As you develop, you will take increasing ownership of projects from initial site survey through to final handover, working through MECHON’s staged project delivery process. Your engineering analysis and written reports are the primary deliverables that MECHON provides to its clients.
With training and development, your key responsibilities will include:
3.1. Engineering Analysis & Calculations
• Pressure loss calculations for ductwork systems and LEV networks, including fan selection and system curve analysis.
• Building thermal modelling including heat load assessments, U-value calculations, solar gain analysis, and equipment heat dissipation.
• Psychrometric analysis for air conditioning processes, humidity control, and coil selection.
• Capture and transport velocity calculations for local exhaust ventilation hood design and optimisation.
• Pollutant dispersal calculations and stack discharge analysis.
3.2. Risk Assessment
• Conducting airborne exposure risk assessments to benchmark workplace conditions against occupational exposure limits, using methodologies aligned with HSG258 and COSHH Essentials.
• DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) risk assessments, including zone classification and explosion risk evaluation.
• Pollution and environmental risk assessments relating to process emissions and discharge.
3.3. Technical Report Writing & Project Delivery
• Producing Stage 2 concept reports presenting assessment findings and recommended control strategies to clients.
• Producing Stage 3 detailed design reports with fully developed engineering solutions and supporting calculations.
• Producing Stage 4 specifications and tender documentation for procurement and construction.
• Continuous management of the design project from initiation to handover, including leading design coordination meetings to align all project stakeholders.
3.4. Site Surveys & Audits
• Conducting comprehensive site audits to assess the suitability and performance of existing process ventilation and environmental control systems.
• Site surveys to gather measurements, process data, and operational information necessary to inform system designs.
• Client liaison and stakeholder engagement throughout the project lifecycle.
3.5. Design Direction & CAD
• Briefing the CAD team with design intent, system layouts, and engineering parameters to enable production of project drawings.
• Reviewing and approving drawings produced by the CAD team against your engineering design.
• Competence in Revit is expected, enabling you to produce and update schematics and make drawing amendments directly when project demands require it.
4. What We Need From You
4.1. Technical Foundations
We don’t expect you to arrive as a ventilation specialist. We do expect a solid grounding in engineering fundamentals that we can build on:
• A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Working knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer principles — applied in a professional setting, not just from textbooks.
• Experience performing engineering calculations by hand or in spreadsheets, not solely reliant on software packages.
• Strong written English and the ability to produce clear, structured technical reports. Our reports and specifications are our primary client deliverables.
• Familiarity with Revit or similar BIM software. You will not be producing drawings as your primary output, but you will need to work competently within Revit when the project requires it.
• A minimum of 3 years’ post-graduation engineering experience. This does not need to be in ventilation or building services — process engineering, chemical plant design, environmental engineering, energy systems, or similar disciplines are equally relevant.
4.2. The Attributes That Actually Matter
Our environment is different from a large consultancy. There’s no layer of project managers between you and the client. You won’t have a team of 20 around you. What you will have is direct responsibility, genuine autonomy, and senior engineers who will invest time in your development. That suits some people brilliantly and doesn’t suit others.
You will thrive here if you:
• Take ownership of your work and your own development. You ask questions because you want to understand, not because you want someone else to make the decision.
• Have worked in more than one professional environment. We value engineers who’ve seen different industries, different working cultures, and different ways of solving problems.
• Take pride in the quality of your written work. Our reports and specifications are what clients pay for — they must be clear, accurate, and professionally presented.
• Are commercially aware. You understand that every hour on a project costs the client money, and you manage your time accordingly.
• Communicate clearly, calmly, and in writing. Our projects involve complex stakeholder relationships. We need people who think before they respond and follow up with written confirmation.
• Are patient about your own progression. We have a competency-based framework for advancement. Promotion is based on demonstrated capability, not time served or negotiation.
• Are genuinely motivated by the purpose of the work — protecting people from occupational ill-health, protecting communities from pollution, and improving working environments.
5. Security Requirements
MECHON works on government and defence contracts requiring Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance as a minimum, with some projects requiring Security Check (SC) clearance. Candidates must be UK-based citizens eligible for these clearances. You do not need to hold clearance at application — MECHON will support you through the process.
6. What We Offer
• Salary of £42,000 – £48,000 per annum, dependent on experience and qualifications.
• Performance bonus scheme available upon progression to Grade S3, with potential to earn up to £4,500+ annually based on utilisation rate and budget compliance.
• Company pension with employer contributions matched up to 6%, increasing upon promotion.
• Fully remote working with flexible hours within core hours of 10:00–15:00 Monday to Friday.
• 22 days’ paid holiday per year plus bank holidays, increasing to 25 days upon progression to S3.
• Paid overtime for hours worked beyond the standard 40-hour week.
• Structured technical development programme including funded training, CPD support, and mentoring from senior engineers with decades of specialist experience.
• A clear, documented competency framework for progression from S4 through to senior consultant and beyond.
• Exposure to varied projects across defence, pharmaceutical, automotive, and manufacturing sectors.
• Equipment provided for remote working, including laptop and software. Travel expenses for site visits fully reimbursed.
• Full UK driving licence required for client site visits.
7. How to Apply
Please submit your CV and a brief covering statement (no more than 300 words) explaining why this role interests you and what you would bring to MECHON. We are particularly interested in the breadth of your professional experience and how you approach unfamiliar technical problems.
We don’t use automated screening. Every application is reviewed by the team. If we think there’s a fit, we’ll arrange an initial conversation before any formal interview.
